ForeUI is a desktop-based prototyping tool that works by dragging and dropping pre-designed UI elements onto a blank page. These elements are organised into themes, so that users can change the format and overall appearance of their mockups with a single click. ForeUI is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris.
- UI elements – The selection of UI elements is arranged into themes. The style of a mockup can be changed by altering the theme, which will automatically alter the style and appearance of each UI element. The available themes include Hand Drawing, Wireframe, Windows and Mac OS X.
- Behavior Definition – The behaviour of each UI element can be programmed without coding through a simple flow chart system. Once an element has been placed on the mockup it’s function can be defined by selecting a range of options from a flow chart.
- Usability testing – An interactive simulation of your site can be run in your web browser, i.e. fully clickable prototypes can be developed.
ForeUI is available as a free trial download or online demo for 15 days, after which the save and export features are disabled. A single user licence costs $99, although students save 50%.

ForeUI places a lot of emphasis on the development of functional prototypes that can be made to look as close to the finished product as possible. The behaviour definition feature is a definite advantage, allowing the prototype to be even more realistic. The UI elements are carefully rendered, while the thematic feature allows traditionalists to opt for hand-drawn or wireframe layouts if they choose.
The fact that ForeUI is desktop based is a drawback in that collaboration and client feedback is more limited, although custom elements and sample plots can be uploaded, downloaded and shared through the ForeUI User Community.
